Though usually painless, gum disease can damage your mouth significantly if it is not taken care of.  Also called periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque buildup on your teeth. Plaque is a sticky film made of bacteria which constantly forms on our teeth and gum tissue.

There are many symptoms that could indicate gum disease. Some of these are:

–gums that bleed easily

–a change in your bite pattern

–gums that have pulled away from teeth

–swollen, tender, red gums

–a change to the fit of dentures or partial dentures

–persistent halitosis (bad breath)

–loose or separating permanent teeth

You may have heard the term “gingivitis” associated with oral care–gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. Gingivitis is certainly treatable, and can usually be reversed through a professional cleaning, followed with excellent daily oral hygiene (twice daily brushing and daily flossing). Advanced gum disease, called periodontitis, can lead to bone and tissue loss in your mouth. It is much more difficult to treat than the earlier stages of gum disease.

The sooner you notice the symptoms of gum disease, the sooner it can be treated. Schedule an appointment with your periodontist immediately if you suspect gum disease at any stage.
